Janice Janssen, RDH, CFE, CFE
When it comes to working at a dental practice, Janice Janssen has seen and done it all. Since her introduction into the field as a teen, she has worked as a dental hygienist and in other roles including office management, insurance billing, and collections. As co-founder of Global Team Solutions (GTS), Janice enjoys consulting because it allows her to share her techniques with the doctors, hygienists, and office staff who are on the front line every day. Teresa Duncan, MS CFE
Teresa is a speaker and writer with over 20 years’ experience in healthcare. Her areas of expertise include proven accounts receivable and insurance methods; and helping doctors and managers establish solid management systems. A recipient of the Educator of the Year Award by the Association of Dental Implant Auxiliaries – a component of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, she understands the importance of continuing education.

Roy Shelburne, DDS
Roy S Shelburne, DDS is a 1981 Honor Graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Dentistry. After graduation, Roy opened his practice in his grandfather’s old hardware store. He has served as president of the Southwest Virginia Dental Society and has volunteered at Virginia’s various MOM projects across the state. Roy has also served as a short-term missionary to Honduras with Baptist Medical Missions International.
Some dentists may fear litigation, but few worry about going to prison. On October 24, 2003, the FBI broke down the back door of Roy’s office and confiscated all of his business and dental records. Over the course of the next 3 years, every aspect of his life was subjected to the closest scrutiny. He was indicted in October of 2006. In March of 2008, Roy was found guilty of healthcare fraud, racketeering, and money laundering, and spent 19 months incarcerated at the Federal Prison Camp in Manchester, KY before his release in 2010.
During the investigation and trial, it became apparent that his records, billing, and coding systems were faulty, and that ignorance is no excuse. While incarcerated, Roy had ample time to reflect on his life and found that true release comes when we draw from our strength, character, vision, wisdom, and experience. A speaker, consultant, and writer, Roy now specializes in records keeping and business systems that protect and defend other doctors from facing the same troubles.
Paul Bornstein, DMD
PAUL BORNSTEIN, D.M.D., has reviewed thousands of claims, helped draft contracts and developed fraud detection guidelines as Chief Dental Consultant for a national insurance company. In addition, Dr. Bornstein has over 30 years of dental practice experience. He served as an instructor and assistant professor for Tufts School of Dental Medicine and as a member of the diagnostic department for the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Bornstein has lectured in 44 states including the Yankee Dental Conference, the Greater New York Meeting and the Big Apple Dental Meeting on dental insurance, fraud and HIPAA. He has published articles on insurance and fraud issues in Dental Economics and Dental Practice Report. Dr. Bornstein is a member of the American Dental Association and the American Association of Dental Consultants. Mike Alder, Unitas PPO Solutions
Mike Alder is founder and President of Unitas Dental. After graduating as a collegiate athlete from the University of Utah, Mike briefly worked for and then acquired a medical device company. After 25 plus years owning and operating his medical device company, Mike's interest in the dental industry was sparked when his youngest son graduated from dental school and opened a practice in the state of California. While helping his son get started, Mike recognized the significant role dental insurance played in the financial success of a dental practice.
He subsequently founded Unitas Dental to help dental practices increase PPO revenue and effectively management PPO insurance participation. Greg Beck, Dental Practice Services
President of Dental Practice Services, Inc. (DPS) and the program manager of the Private Dental Plan (PDP) program. DPS sets up customized dental service plans for dental offices to offer dental coverage directly to their patients and to the public in lieu of recommending insurance. A PDP is ideal for an office who wants to offer a self-administered plan and build a patient base separate from insurance-based dentistry. It is best used for offices to keep one-time emergency patients to permanent practice patients or to eliminate unwanted/unprofitable insurance plans and convert patients to their own plan. DPS has operated the PDP program since 2002 and works with dental consultants to promote the concept of self-administered plans as a means to rely less on insurance-based dentistry.
